  • I went to see a play called Water yesterday, by a theatre company called Filter (as far as I'm aware the connection between the two names is just a coincidence). It was extremely good. It made very good use of multimedia (including voice sampling, which was used in two very powerful, intense scenes involving a cave diver attempting to break a world record).

There were only three actors (plus the live sound people who were also on stage), playing a wide range of characters and using a multitude of clever devices. They seamlessly moved between accents and personas and swift, ingenious scene changes. The live, electronic music seemed to add a sort of tragic poignancy to the whole play, so I was attempting not to bawl the whole way through. And at the end, a shimmery curtain was lowered and the whole set was turned into an aquarium. It's finished playing at the Lyric Hammersmith now, but I think it's touring elsewhere. I am definitely going to watch out for Filter's other work (and the band that the music guy fronts, CatHead).

I started doing NaNoWriMo on Thursday. I'm determined to do the 50,000 words this year, having done so in 2004 (although I never managed to complete that particular novel); but failing to get even close for the last two years. I'm about 2,000 words behind schedule at the moment, but I plan to make that up. I'm writing a children's story (in theory) about an unhappy girl who can teleport when she is feeling particularly low, and ends up in all kinds of weird and wonderful places. I'm hoping it'll be a fun project, if a rather crap novel. I wrote bits of it at work last week, keeping it minimised if anyone came over, and renaming it 'cataloguing notes' so people would think it was a work-related document, should they happen to be looking that closely at my screen. Sneaky.

Your story sounds like fun. 50,000 words in a month sounds pretty daunting to me! I'm a slow writer; it takes me hours to get 100 down. I suppose the whole point of the exercise is to discipline yourself to knock the words out at speed though.

Oh, I've written about five hundred words so far.  No, that's not strictly true.  I've written double that but I started again so the first five hundred don't count.  I think I'm too much of a perfectionist to knock out 50,000 words in one month.

    Good luck with it .
